CRKT to Introduce Forged By War’s First Folding Knife

CRKT has provided KnifeNews readers with an exclusive sneak peek of the Arcane, the first folding knife in the Forged By War lineup. US Army Special Forces Veteran Jeremy Valdez took inspiration from a critical incident he experienced to arrive at the Arcane’s distinctive design.

On a tour in Afghanistan, Valdez found himself having to rescue several soldiers trapped in a helicopter crash. “As I was pulling out the last soldier he was wrapped up in a lot of debris from the crash,” Valdez recalls. Valdez eventually was able to free the soldier but the blade he had with him wasn’t right for the job. As a result of the incident, Valdez set out to create a knife that could both live up to a soldier’s day-to-day requirements and excel in such a scenario. “Those are the key factors to it: speed, safety, and utility,” Valdez says. “I hope that it can help someone in some far-off land in the future.”

The Arcane’s 3.6-inch 8Cr14MoV tanto blade incorporates a single Veff serration at the heel which performs like a belt cutter – without the need for additional parts seen on other rescue-style knives. The Arcane deploys via a flipper or a thumb cutout, and has a body made from aluminum, weighing a reasonable 4.7 oz.

Though this is Valdez’s first foray into knife design, a long career as a Special Forces soldier that include two Purple Hearts and 14 years as a Green Beret informs his design sensibility and contribute to the explicit military persona of the knife. “I let the struggle of war flow onto the paper as I’m designing,” Valdez says.

Valdez is the Chief Ambassador for the Green Beret Foundation and he chose to have proceeds from the Arcane donated to that Veterans’ organization. “I think they have a good cause and I thought that giving them my support will help out future brothers of mine.”

The Arcane will be on display at Blade Show and is slated for a July release. Buyers should expect an MSRP of $59.99.
