James Brand Joins up with Sitka Gear for First Kitchen Knife

Prior to Blade Show, James Brand released its latest knife, the Anzick. This is a piece of high-end kitchen cutlery, produced in collaboration with Sitka Gear and designed specifically to withstand the rigors of outdoor use.

In the enthusiast sector, interest in kitchen knives has grown and grown over the years – that’s no secret. In that process many of us have learned that, just as there’s no single tool that can encompass all the possible meanings of a “pocket knife,” there’s such a tremendous variety in application, style, and design in kitchen knives that a single term like “chef knife” could never have a sole, indisputable meaning.

To that end, the Anzick is an “outdoor chef’s knife,” bringing the expected slicing and dicing capabilities into a package informed by hard use knives and built from the same kind of materials. Central to that, of course, is the 8-inch blade which (stop us if you’ve heard this one before), sees Larrin Thomas’s MagnaCut steel making another appearance, it’s first in the James Brand catalog. We’ve talked a lot about MagnaCut’s performance as an everyday carry steel (it’s what it was designed for, after all), but the stuff’s balanced characteristics are just as desirable in a kitchen knife; high stain resistance and edge retention, and a formulation amenable to sharpening and repair.

The Anzick is full tang, of course, with generous slabs of contoured G-10 laid on top of its single piece frame, filling the hand and carrying the all-black color scheme downward. Sheaths aren’t something that you normally expect with kitchen knives but, given the Anzick’s specific remit as something that will be venturing outside of traditional kitchens, James Brand and Sitka have included a Hypalon sheath for easier portage.

As we said, the Anzick dropped before Blade Show. It is still available, but in a limited edition of just 600 pieces, with no more in the offing at this point.
