Three Makers Join Cutlery Hall of Fame in 2023

It’s hard to believe, but Blade Show is just a little over a month away. There’s all sorts of reasons to get excited about the big midyear event, including the induction of three more makers into the Cutlery Hall of Fame.

The Cutlery Hall of Fame was founded by Blade Magazine (who also run Blade Show itself) in 1983. Each year since, a couple of worthy makers have been added into its, starting with Bo Randall, Dewey Ferguson, and Uncle Henry Baer. Most years see just one or two makers inducted, so 2023’s ceremony is a bit special in that three more names are being added to the Hall of Fame. The makers are:

Bob Terzuola, a legendary name in custom and production circles, and the grandfather of the tactical knife. Many of the precepts that tactical knife makers still use today originated with Terzuola. In fact, he literally wrote the book on the subject, called The Tactical Knife: A Study of the Anatomy and Construction of the Liner-Locked Folder. Terzuola originally published the book in 2000, but an updated edition came out last year with additional content.

Devin Thomas, knife maker and one of the foremost names in damascus steel. Thomas’s patterns have been a staple in custom knife making for many, many years, and are also treasured by craftspeople in other fields. Some of Thomas’s damascus patterns are so popular you probably recognize them even if you don’t know them by name.

Speaking of damascus, the final 2023 inductee is Steve Schwarzer. Schwarzer is all about handmade knives, and is in fact the longest continually serving Master Smith in the American Bladesmith Society. He specializes in mosaic damascus, a type of damascus in which the various steels are welded into patterns or pictures – true works of art.

The induction ceremony will take place at 8:00am EST on Saturday, June 3rd. While part of the Blade Show festivities, a separate ticket is required to get into the ceremony. As a reminder, Blade Show 2023 runs from June 2-4 in Atlanta, Georgia.
