An interesting fixed blade is on the way from Boker and collaborator Brent Michael Smith, who works under the shop name of Bald Man Knife & Tool. They have come together to create the Thicker Clipper, a fixed blade that lives up to its name while still staying in or near the EDC fixed blade class.
This is in fact a very faithful production translation of Smith’s custom original. The Thicker Clipper straddles the line between an everyday carry and hard use fixed blade – not to say, of course, that these have to be mutually exclusive categories. The 2.14-inch blade makes up in thickness what it lacks in length; hewn from a .22-inch stock, the Thicker Clipper indeed thicker than many hard use fixed blades with much larger cutting edges.
Smith’s implementation of an American-style tanto profile is a key feature as well. This is a blade shape that is naturally robust, so it can really make the most of all that meat behind the edge. The steel choice, D2, falls right in line with the Thicker Clipper’s job description, with high edge holding capabilities for the price class; the black stonewash finish will do yeoman’s service in repelling rust as well, resulting in a knife that is just as ready for the outdoors as it is the workshop.
The imposing full tang of the Thicker Clipper is capped on either flat by brown burlap Micarta scales, held in place by two large Torx screws. It’s not visible when looking at the knife side-on, but there is a hidden lanyard hole on the butt end of the knife, buried in a divot. The Thicker Clipper comes with a simple Kydex pancake sheath for predictable, no-surprises carry options.
The Thicker Clipper will be available soon.
