Benchmade Necron Bali Goes Gold in New Release

If you happen to have a little extra cash this month, you might be interested to know that Benchmade has dropped a new Gold Class knife. This time they’ve given their Necron balisong an elaborate material makeover.

The Necron is actually a freshman in the Benchmade lineup, having released just this year. It is the company’s latest balisong, but far from their first. As many may already know, Benchmade’s connection to the balisong format go all the way back to its beginnings – in fact, in those early days, it was actually named “Bali-Song,” before rebranding as Pacific Cutlery and, eventually, Benchmade. Although standard folder designs comprise the bulk of the Benchmade output now, every so often they put out new balis for that particular audience.

As is standard Gold Class protocol, these two variants do not make any changes to the dimensions of the model. That means a 4.59-inch weehawk-style blade and a handle whose balance can be tweaked with the adjustable tungsten weights; it can also be extended or shrunk down by adding/removing the titanium attachments at the butt end of the knife. Worth pointing out to newbies to the bali genre, the Necron is a latchless balisong, meaning that the two handle halves do not lock together in any way – a construction style that is made for flipping, but requires practice to use safely.

Now, what makes these Gold Class Necrons golden? They’ve got upgraded scales courtesy of Fat Carbon: either Jungle Wear or red/black Lava Flow. In lieu of the line standard S30V Benchmade is rolling these bad boys out in two different, proprietary Damasteel patterns. The “Monarch” pattern, seen on the Jungle Wear model, has intricate, emblem-like lozenge shapes, while the Lava Flow model comes with the aptly-named “Weehawk” pattern, a closely-ranked, serrated look.
