Gerber Throws Enthusiasts a Fastball

Gerber has just released the Fastball, its latest flipper knife. The Fastball is a trend-conscious knife that was designed to check boxes for the EDC enthusiast crowd.

In terms of dimensions, the Fastball conforms to comfortable EDC numbers. The modified wharncliffe blade measures 3 inches long overall and is made from S30V steel, which we’ve seen on a few Gerber releases here and there, including the US-Assist. Like the US-Assist the Fastball incorporates Gerber’s BOSS ball bearing pivot setup, but this time in a manual flipper configuration rather than a thumb stud assisted opener, as was the case with its predecessor.

The Fastball handle keeps a straighlaced profile, accentuated only by a few hard angles and a stretch of flared, chamfered edge underneath the pivot. Made from aluminum and available in three different colorations, the Fastball’s handles also support a three-way positionable clip and elongated lanyard hole near the butt end. The Fastball is a liner lock and weighs 2.7 oz. overall.

Gerber is manufacturing the Fastball domestically and says that it embodies their drive to develop products that the enthusiast knife community can embrace. “We took cues from the knife community and EDC trends to build a platform that will quickly become the favorite blade in any collection, and an ideal do-it-all flipper for any task,” says Karrson Koivisto, Product Manager at Gerber. The company first told us that it wanted to cater more to enthusiast markets in 2017, and have delivered on that promise in different ways across several releases. The SharkBelly, G1, and the US-Assist are all products of this drive, and they are joined by the new liner lock flipper.

The popular Center-Drive multitool was another enthusiast-pleasing release for the company, and is getting a line extension for 2019: the Center-Drive Plus. The new model makes minor tweaks to the popular platform in response to user feedback, namely the addition of spring loaded scissors, a partially serrated blade, and an included leather sheath for carry.
