Kizer x You Contest Winner Sees First Production Knife Drop

Even though we’re in the thick of October and post-Blade Show West coverage, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that August saw the arrival of the Kizer Bulldog, a significant new release for the company because it is the first production design from O.Sho, who won the design competition that Kizer held last spring.

In April-May 2023, Kizer ran the Kizer x You contest. Entrants were tasked with putting their spin on an unfinished Kizer knife; whoever made the best finished knife would win a contract with Kizer. O.Sho won the contest only a year after he first began designing knives; the Bulldog is the self-taught designer’s first ever production collaboration.

The aluminum model is a tad heavier than the Micarta version

The Bulldog lives up to its name with a compact but sturdy build. The 3-inch blade is a wide modified wharncliffe shape, with an upraised tip to give the typically straight line edge a bit of belly in addition to upping that tip’s ability to pierce. In short, the Bulldog checks all the expected EDC boxes, and it comes with one of the classic EDC steels, too: 154CM. Kizer probably uses this stainless the most out of any production company these days, and even after decades in circulation it is a likeable, well-rounded choice for a sub-$100 user.

The Bulldog’s cutting capabilities are further strengthened by a handle that’s raised above the blade, putting that edge at a negative angle in relation to the user’s grip. This is something you see on kitchen knives a lot, and on folding knives occasionally, but a nice ergonomic touch here. The handle profile is otherwise restrained, and comes in two flavors: a textured aluminum model (with bubblegum pink hardware accents), or a green Micarta model. Both versions use Kizer’s Clutch Lock Axis-like and have the same loop over deep carry pocket clip, which can be swapped to either side. The Micarta model weighs 3.43 oz., and the aluminum clocks in at 4 oz.
