Artisan Teases Second Christain Porterfield Collab

Artisan Cutlery gave followers a first glance at a new Christain Porterfield design this week. Although it doesn’t have a name or a release date yet, the proto looks like it will deliver high-performance EDC characteristics in a compact form factor.

This prototype’s modified sheepsfoot measures 3 inches on the nose – pretty much the sweet spot for most users’ EDC needs. The modifications to the usual sheepsfoot pattern give the edge here a bit of belly, and a tip that’s eminently usable for piercing tasks. The modified sheepsfoot is a trendy modern blade style, so it’s fitting that Porterfield also gave his knife a trendy modern opening method: a front flipper. It’s a low profile one too, which allows the knife to be impressively slim when closed.

The prototype, when closed, is compact indeed

Artisan makes its knives from several different steels, but one of the less-common super steels in their portfolio is S90V, a stainless PM steel with a formidable reputation. S90V brings a big helping of edge retention to the table alongside high stain resistance, and it’s fairly tough too; it does take some patience to resharpen, but anybody looking at enthusiast-level steels like S90V should be prepared to make that effort when necessary.

Portfield paired this high-end, utilitarian blade with a high-end, utilitarian handle. The proto’s scales are made from full titanium slabs that have been hit with a light diagonal texturing. Turning the knife over reveals the steel-capped titanium frame lock bar, and the sculpted titanium pocket clip – which can be reversed to the opposite side, something that is not always a guarantee, especially with sculpted pocket clips.

This is the second Christain Porterfield design from Artisan, the first being the Nova, a knife that is available now. As for this prototype, Porterfield has said there will be more info to come later this year.
