Austin McGlaun’s Clever Girl Fixed Blade Gets Serrated Variant

Here’s a quiet new release from CRKT: a variant of the Clever Girl fixed blade with a new handle material and a partially serrated blade.

The Clever Girl is a signature design of Austin McGlaun, longtime friend of KnifeNews and a key talent in CRKT’s corral. It first released in 2016, one of three inaugural knives in CRKT’s Forged by War line, a series of veteran-designed knives, a portion of whose sales contribute to various veteran-oriented charities. It made a major impression with its sweeping Persian-style trailing point, full tang ruggedness, and hard use-ready SK-5 steel. In 2019 the Clever Girl line grew with the addition of a folder, and now the original fixed blade gets a second variation.

Most notable here is the fact that this Clever Girl is also a serrated girl – partially serrated, anyway, with a run of Veff serrations starting at the base of the 4.6-inch blade and running out for a good way. Veff serrations are a proprietary CRKT staple, a creation of professional knife sharpener Tom Veff. Their elongated, scallop-shaped geometry provides a high amount of raw cutting power and, on the Clever Girl in particular, boost its ability with rope or fabric cutting, which are two common obstacles for tactical/hard use oriented knives.

That’s the performance-oriented change here; but looking at the handle we see the cosmetic change. Gone are the black G-10 scales, with some more vibrant blue marbled G-10 scales instead. It can be hard to tell in the pictures, but these new scales have the same ribbed texturing that the original ones had, providing plenty of grip for whatever climate or situation may bring. A Kydex sheath is included as well; in total the Clever Girl 6.3 oz.

As mentioned above, all Forged by War knives contribute a portion of their proceeds to a charity that is chosen by the designer. In the case of the Clever Girl, McGLaun chose to help out the Green Beret Foundation, which helps Special Forces and their families in a variety of ways.
