Begg Knives Releases JVO/Olson Micro Burst Collaboration

This year’s Blade Show was a slobberknocker, with an absolute metric ton of news to discuss. There was no way we were able to give every cool project its due, but one we regretted in particular was the suite of new production models from Begg Knives, all collaboration pieces. So today we’re giving the spotlight to Micro Burst, a model designed by Jared Van Otterloo and Rod Olson.

The Micro Burst gets its name from two things: the latter half comes from the massive sunburst style pivot – well, collar seems like too small of a word; maybe it’s a pivot ruff? The first half comes, of course, from the knife’s generally compact size. These production Micro Burst models comes with a 2.25-inch wharncliffe. Wharnies are trendy, but they also work really well in smaller lengths, where users have a lot of control so the straight cutting edge can really pull its weight, and the tip pierce into where it needs to go accurately.

Users open their Micro Burst with a an extremely low-profile spine flipper tab, a thin, knurled ridge that might go by unnoticed at a cursory glance. Once open, it locks into place with a button lock, an equally trendy and fidget friendly element as the flipper. All of these mechanical details, by the way, echo the ones seen on custom versions of the Micro Burst, which JVO and Olson have produced in the past. They’ve also got a “Mega Burst” custom piece with a scaled up design, if you want to check that out.

Moving back to this production Micro Burst, its handle is small, with lots of embellishment in the form of textured sections inlays, but it’s got a nice, neutral profile beneath all the glitz, and you can see the Begg influence clearly in the ceramic ball-interface pocket clip. All in the all, the Micro Burst comes in under the “tiny tank” category with a stout weight of 4.3 oz.
