Benchmade Set to Drop AXIS Assist Workhorse Next Month

Benchmade’s been busy lately, revealing a couple new projects – chief among them the new PSK (Personal Survival Kit), a heavy duty, all-terrain folder.

Virtually every company under the sun has put out a drop point or two. We imagine it’s difficult to imprint an identity on the ubiquitous profile – but Benchmade’s managed to do that: they have a certain touch with their drop points’ lines that make them uniquely ‘Benchmade.’ That signature flavor’s certainly present on the PSK’s 3.45-inch aerodynamic take on the form, further enlivened by stepped cuts on the blade flat, three on either side.

Here’s the carbon fiber bolster model, which is slightly lighter

But there’s more to talk about when it comes to the PSK’s blade than its looks. First of all, it’s made from MagnaCut, a steel that has become very important to Benchmade – as well as the knife industry as a whole, of course. The PSK also stands out because it is an AXIS Assist knife. If you’re not familiar, an AXIS Assist combines Benchmade’s ambidextrous staple mechanism with spring-powered deployment, a la standard assisted knives. The PSK also incorporates a spine-side secondary safety, which you can flick into place to prevent accidental deployment.

The PSK’s blade and AXIS Assist accoutrements are all packed into a sold-looking handle comprised of chevron-textured 2/3rds G-10 scales and a bolster, the material of which varies depending on which of the two PSK flavors you opt for. The standard model has OD green scales and a gray G-10 bolster, while the black G-10 scale model is capped with a carbon fiber bolster instead. You save about a tenth of an ounce if you get the CF model: it weights 5.22 oz. while the full G-10 model tips the scales at 5.33 oz.

Benchmade says that the PSK will release at the beginning of August.
