Civivi Starflare Delivers Sleek Take on EDC Wharnie

It must be wharnie month over at We Knife Co. headquarters. Recently we wrote about the Yardbird, a wild karambitized wharncliffe from collaborator Maciej Torbé; now, under the Civivi flag, the in-house design crew are prepping the Starflare for release, a super slick button lock knife with a wharncliffe slicer blade.

There’s something about wharnie blades, in pictures, that makes it hard to get an accurate idea of their size. You might look at the Starflare and think it’s going to be on the smaller side, but no: at a blade length of 3.2 inches, this is a mid-size piece. This is no modified wharncliffe either: you’ve got a pure straight edge here, running out to a highly acute, very pointy tip.

Like most wharncliffes you see these days, the one on the Starflare is designed to be a day-to-day, everyday carry cutter. These characteristics are backed up by one of the perennial Civivi knife steel options, Nitro-V. There was a time when we here at KnifeNews really expected Nitro-V to assume the kind of ubiquity amongst budget-conscious knives that, in actuality, went to D2; regardless, it’s a great option in that price range, with better rust resistance than the semi-stainless and a more even-keeled personality on the sharpening stones.

For opening and locking, Civivi opted for a thumb stud/button lock combo, so, needless to say, the fidget factor on the Starflare will be pretty high. The blade and its attendant mechanism all pack themselves into a handsome, ever-so-slightly tapered handle made from aluminum, and decorated with some divots and lines – one of which is continued on the blade itself, forming an arc with the corresponding line on the handle. Rounding out the package on the 3.45 oz. Starflare, you’ve got a reversible deep carry pocket clip.

The Starflare, like the aforementioned Yardbird, will be available next month.
