The utility knife concept, one of the oldest folding knife designs around, has enjoyed a major renaissance through Kickstarter: many, many designers have taken a crack at the venerable workin’ knife format, some of which we’ve covered here. But the Zero stands out with its striking minimalist design and patent-pending, screw-free design.
At a glance, the Zero doesn’t look like a knife at all, let along a utility knife; it looks more like a worry stone or other EDC-related accessory. But, by sliding the front of the knife, the utility blade is deployed and the Zero ready to work. Closing works in a similar way; pulling back on the scale retracts the blade back into the 2.67-inch frame.
The Zero’s handle brings another unique feature: there are no screws holding the thing together, and no tools are required to disassemble or reassemble it. Designer Michael Sayers, on the Kickstarter page, describes the patent-pending design in an intriguing way: “Some of the internal mechanism is similar to the tricks used inside a mechanical puzzle.”
You can get a Zero made from either aluminum, which comes with a soft gray anodization, or brass, which comes with a raw tumble finish. Obviously the later is much heftier, tips the scales at 6 oz., three times heavier than the 2 oz. aluminum model. Both Zeros are clipless, in keeping with Sayers’ ultra-minimal vision; they are designed for loose carry in the pocket. Worth noting is that, if the Zero campaign meets a $100,000 stretch goal, Rivery CNC will introduce a titanium option as well.
With more than 20 days to go, the Zero is well on its way to that goal, having made more than $20,000 at the time of writing, blowing way past its $3,000 target. Funding is open through January 12th 2024.
