James Brand Folsom Delivers Signature Style at New Price Point

When it first appeared on the scene in 2013, The James Brand won fans (and detractors) with its focus on modern and urban designs. But since its inception, customers have been asking for lower-priced options and superior ergonomics to go along with the signature James look. With the brand new Folsom liner lock knife, the company satisfies both requests in a single package.

The Chapter and the County, James’ first two knives, sell for $275 and $150 respectively, prices that not everyone can afford. Ryan Coulter, founder of The James Brand, acknowledges that the cost has sometimes been a stumbling block for some fans. “People have been asking for a lower-priced knife since we put out the Chapter. We’ve wanted to give them that more attainable option since the beginning.” The Folsom’s G-10 handle scales and 2.81” CTS-BD1 blade keep it functional and relatively inexpensive at $99.

Improved ergonomics have been another long-term customer request. “The Chapter was very linear and beautiful, but the ergos were something we wanted to improve upon,” Coulter says. The Folsom forgoes the Chapter’s angular style for more curves and a wider profile. It is also the first James knife with an ambidextrous clip – something Coulter, a lefty himself, has been thirsting for since the beginning.

Even though the Folsom is more of a workhorse, Coulter and his team still strove to incorporate the James Brand design touches into the knife. A triangular opening cutout is functional, but also adds a unique character to the drop point blade. The Folsom’s anodized lanyard tube and backspacer are James’ signature green color on all models. Coulter says these quirky details make it clear that the Folsom is still a James Brand knife. “We tried to sweat the details that we’re known for.”

Three more blades are on James’ product roadmap. Coulter says that a Chapter 2 is in the works as well as another premium tier titanium frame lock. He also wants to bring another accessibly-priced blade to the market in the form of a keychain knife.

The Folsom is available in five color combinations directly from The James Brand website.
