Mikkel Willumsen Founds New FABRIK Production Line

Mikkel Willumsen of Urban Tactical is launching the FABRIK Line, a new production series that offers his designs at more affordable price points. The Tyran is leading the charge, and the Copenhagen-based maker tells us three additional models are already set to follow.

With FABRIK, Willumsen has knife parts produced to his standards and then assembles them at his workshop. The line helps to solve a common custom maker problem. “I have a lot of customers that want my knives, but can’t afford a $1,000 knife,” Willumsen tells us. He is full up on custom orders, and although there are already production Willumsen designs from other companies, would-be customers had to wait if they wanted something worked on by the man himself.

The Tyran spearheads the FABRIK initiative. The striking 4.5 oz. frame lock flipper leverages a big forward choil for superlative ergonomics. “It is very comfortable. That was super important for me,” says Willumsen. “It’s designed to be a user knife.” He accented the 3.5-inch drop point blade with his iconic oversized fuller. “The groove in the blade is my signature grind. Hunters like it when they field dress, but I just made it to look stylish,” Willumsen admits.

Three more Willumsen designs are already slated to follow the Tyran. He expects FABRIK version of his Sugga and Mad Dog models by Christmas. In order to maximize accessibility, every new custom design Willumsen releases will see a FABRIK version as well. And although the Tyran is still an expensive knife, the plan is to hit lower price points in the future, with at least one future release set to sell for $100. Collaborations with production companies will continue to factor into Willumsen’s work, including forthcoming releases with Böker and SOG.

Alongside the new production knife emphasis, Willumsen has stopped taking custom orders via the traditional ‘book’ method. Instead, he is adopting the increasingly popular method of making whichever knives he wants and selling them through his various channels. “I am not done with custom knives, just with custom orders,” he tells us.

The Tyran flipper knife is available now directly from Urban Tactical.
