New Spyderco Sprint Run Puts Micro-Melt Steel in the Spotlight

Spyderco is always testing out new steels. Their metallurgical bent benefits buyers, not only in the long-term onboarding of steels like S110V into full, ongoing production lines, but also for short-term, Sprint Run specials. The latest Sprint from the company is the CTS-PD#1 family, featuring a rarely-seen offering from Carpenter and a cool color scheme to accompany it.

CTS-PD#1 is Carpenter’s equivalent to Crucible’s Cru-Wear steel, created with their proprietary manufacturing process, called Micro-Melt. PD#1 is an advanced tool steel, a semi-stainless formulation with excellent edge retention and toughness in particular; that’s a combo of characteristics that makes it a particularly canny choice for hard use. And, in the case of these Spydie Sprint models, the semi-stainless characteristic shouldn’t give much pause, as all of these knives come with black titanium carbon nitride blade coatings.

As we’ve seen before with Spyderco steel family Sprints, the company implemented the PD#1 in a selection of their core models, and four out of the six total models are available now. First up, you’ve got the Delica 4, a classic that should need no introduction as the flagship EDC for Golden, CO’s most prominent knife maker. Then you’ve got its two close siblings, the Endela and Endura 4, each a step up in blade length but with the same comfy ergonomics and great blade shape. The trio is joined by the Police 4, which sports a very similar profile to the Delica/Endela/Endura family but boosts the blade length all the way up to 4.38 inches.

Although these PD#1 models are obviously spec’d for use, many out there buy these Sprint runs to add to their Spyderco collections. And we’d imagine that one of the joys for these collectors is that each steel Sprint gets its a new color scheme, unique to that steel. The PD#1 models got particularly lucky in this regard as, in addition to the black blade coating, their scales are made from a rich wine-like burgundy color that’s quite distinct from anything else Spyderco has produced recently.

The PD#1 Sprints are available now, but you should act quick if you want one.
