The Spyderco Respect is the KnifeNews Readers’ Choice for Best New Tactical Fixed Blade 2019! Sal Glesser’s magisterial bowie design took top honors in a category that also included the Benchmade Mini SOCP, TOPS Devil’s Claw 2, and the We Knife Co. Reazio.
As a titan of the knife industry, Sal Glesser needs no introduction. When the Founder of Spyderco and designer of some of its most beloved knives turns out a new blade, you pay attention. And among Spyderco’s 2019 releases was Glesser’s tribute to the American bowie, the Respect.
Bowie knives are defined by their blade, and the Respect’s 7.94-inch take on the bowie shape is a memorable one: an elongated, sinuous swedge dips down from the sturdy spine and runs out to a very acute tip. Bold and attractive, the blade itself is the most obvious visual flourish on the Respect. Across the board knife is handsome but everything else – from the sturdy blade stock, well-rounded CPM-154 steel, to the simple G-10 scales – bespeaks a drive for utility and function. Many bowie-style knives are intended as throwbacks, historical homages, collector’s pieces – not the Respect.
That drive for utility continues onto the handle itself. Glesser’s eye for ergonomics never fails, and the Respect’s handle, with a simple palm swell and curling beak end, is ready to work for a long time. It may not be the flashiest knife in the Spyderco 2019 lineup, but the Respect quietly impresses anybody who picks one up. In its own particular way it’s a showstopper, and a reminder that Sal Glesser is as capable with fixed blade ideas as he is with folding blade ones.
