The Northwoods Knives Fremont Jack is Coming Back

KnivesShipFree is preparing to release a run of the Northwoods Knives Fremont Jack later today. The latest batch of this popular traditional knife will be the first Northwoods release since the tragic passing of KnivesShipFree Founder Derrick Bohn late last month.

In the knife community, the Fremont Jack has become something of a legend. It was Northwoods Knives’ first absolute smash hit, and played a significant role in the traditional knife revival sweeping through the industry in recent years. “The Northwoods Fremont Jack has been a favorite among our customers since its debut in 2013,” recalls KnivesShipFree team member J Rouch.

The Fremont Jack has the iconic look of a traditional pattern that has been around for a century. But in actuality, Derrick himself originated the modern classic in 2013. A sleeveboard-style handle tapers from the pivot, reducing mass but also improving ergonomics at the business end of the knife. Derrick hit upon the pocket-friendly folder’s attractive, unusual blade shape in a moment of inspiration. He took a sheepsfoot blade and tweaked it, adding a generous, curving swedge, turning it into a modified wharncliffe in the process. This robust, highly useful 2.5-inch blade has been affectionately dubbed the ‘Bohncliffe’ by fans and collectors. 1095 carbon steel provides a tough, easy-to-sharpen edge for maintenance, and will develop a handsome patina with use over time.

Scale options for Fremont Jack

The current form of the Northwoods Knives brand began in 2010, when Derrick purchased the label from Founder Dave Shirley. A steady stream of quality traditional designs – both new and original – made Northwoods a force to be reckoned with. Rouch has worked closely with Derrick at the helm of the Northwoods project. “Two years ago he brought me onboard to work with him on Northwoods designs for production through Great Eastern Cutlery,” he tells us. Rouch confirms that the Northwoods brand is here to stay. “Derrick was so passionate about the Northwoods brand. The KnivesShipFree team and I are continuing Derrick’s Northwoods legacy with new designs as well as popular favorites like the Fremont Jack.”

KSF is putting out this run of the Fremont Jack in five different handle materials: Sambar Stag, Mammoth Ivory, Red Linen Micarta, Green Canvas Micarta, and Smoke Burlap. The knife will be available through this link this afternoon, Wednesday June 6th, 2018, at 4pm Eastern.
