August will end, and September begin, with the fourteenth annual Usual Suspects Network Gathering. Known to friends as simply The Gathering, the show continues to be a one-of-a-kind event that emphasizes the personal, social side of our hobby.
After more than ten years, it’s safe to say that the Gathering is an institution in the knife world, just as much of an event as Blade or SHOT – albeit with a key difference in scale. But in fact that element of scale is key: the Gathering is purposely small, which allows those who attend to savor the finer, almost intangible aspects of the knife hobby: making friends over a shared niche interest, meeting up with people you may only know by an online handle, and rubbing shoulders with fellow collectors and famous makers alike.
For exhibitors, part of the appeal is the setup of the show. The Gathering is built around a concept of “quads,” where two up-and-coming makers share table space with someone in the full swing of their career, and a headliner name too. This melange gives the newcomers increased visibility, as well as a chance to socialize with, and learn from, more established names in the field.
Then of course there’s the in-person Trader’s Cove. Most of the year, the Cove is just the name of the buy/sell/trade branch of the USN forum; but once a year, at the Gathering, it becomes a real place, populated by real people, and is a legendary aspect of the show in and of itself. Even if you don’t end up buying anything off the tables, you might find yourself wheeling and dealing into the night at the Trader’s Cove.
USN Gathering XIV opens on Friday, August 31st and runs through the weekend – which is, as is traditional, Labor Day weekend. This is just your first notice, stay tuned for more coverage!
