New Kizer Collaborator Creates Fixed Blade Duo

Kizer Cutlery has added a new designer to its corral of collaborators. Jonathan Styles of Newfoundland Knife Co. brings Kizer a pair of clean, capable fixed blade designs this year.

Elgon

The Elgon is a mid-sized fixed blade fusion of bushcraft ergos and Japanese bladecraft. Its total edge length is 3.94 inches long, and it’s a Japanese-style tanto, transitioning gentle between primary edge and secondary edge – a set up that gives it both universal cutting capability and high piercing power. The blade steel is good old D2, so edge retention and toughness on this flat ground blade will be fairly high.

Meanwhile the handle is where we see elements of bushcraft design coming through. The rounded Micarta scales fill the hand, while very subtle grooves indicate where the fingers should go without dictating it outright. Like its companion piece detailed below, the Elgon comes with a Kydex sheath.

Cabox

Very different in form and function, the Cabox’s wide drop point blade is noticeably shorter than the Elgon’s tanto, coming in at 3.34 inches. Kizer describes this one as a skinner, a role that drop points are particularly well-suited for, but with both belly and straight edge it can do a lot more besides. D2 is also the steel of choice here, which, while it may not be 100% stainless, brings a higher level of toughness and edge retention compared to other budget-tier steels in exchange for that susceptibility.

Ergonomics here see a much deeper forward finger choil and, interestingly, a finger ring on the butt end. We suspect this is here less for tactical-style reverse grips, and more to keep the knife from slipping out of the hand during use in standard ones. Regardless the same gray Micarta scales are present here, as is the Kydex sheath.

Both the Elgon and the Cabox are available now, alongside other new Kizer releases like the Kobold 2.0.
