Zero Tolerance Pegs Release Date for Martin Factory Custom

Out with the old and in with the new. Last week, KAI USA’s discontinued list conveyed the news that a handful of Zero Tolerance models were leaving the catalog. This week, the company pegged a release date for a long-awaited Factory Custom design from RJ and Matthew Martin: the limited edition ZT0606CF.

The centerpiece of the Zero Tolerance 0606CF is an oversized pivot with a hole clear through the center – what RJ Martin calls his ‘Pivotless Pivot’ design. Martin says the Pivotless Pivot was originally intended to be a distinctive riff on large-diameter pivots for bigger blades. “I wanted to do something different with the pivot – and the way I did that was by putting a hole right through it.” Martin has occasionally used the Pivotless Pivot on his Devastator and Q36 knives to great acclaim.

When ZT debuted the Factory Custom line in 2014 with the Rick Hinderer 0392, they promised to bring custom parts to high-end production designs. The 0606CF is no exception. On RJ Martin’s custom work, the complex Pivotless Pivot is produced by his son, machinist and pen designer Matthew Martin. With that experience, Matthew also made all the Pivotless Pins for the 0606CF run. RJ says that this father/son collaboration has been a tremendous success. “I couldn’t ask for anything more. I’m extremely impressed.”

ZT is known for high production values but they’re taking things to another level with the 0606CF. Its 4-inch CTS-XHP blade has been given a two-tone finish, with DLC-coated flats and satin primary grinds. Two separate machining and anodizing processes result in a contrasting blue and gold color palette that makes the 0606CF a stand out. Custom pivot aside, no hardware is visible on the show side. A carbon fiber insert and back spacer, KVT ball-bearing pivot, lockbar insert and 3D-machined clip round out the high-end finishing touches. “They’re really showcasing their abilities with this one,” RJ Martin says.

Previous releases in the ZT Factory Custom line have sold out in a matter of minutes and resale values have escalated quickly. The 0606CF will be available for sale November 3rd at 9am Pacific Time.
