Carbon Fiber Buck Stockman Leads Surprise Release of Discontinued Models

Buck did something a little unusual this week, dropping a batch of limited run models out of nowhere. These knives are all variants of models that exist, or have existed, in the Buck catalog before now.

The headlining release in this surprise batch was a limited edition version of the 301 Stockman knife. In the crazy traditional knife world of today, it’s easy to forget that Buck has maintained a small but significant lineup of traditionals for many, many years; the 301 is one such piece. The stockman pattern is so called because it is meant to be used by cattlemen and other ranchers who work with livestock. In its most classic configuration, it’s a three-blade pattern, with a main clip blade, and secondary spey and sheepsfoot blades.

That’s the exact setup that Buck employs on both the standard, and this special edition 301. The blade steel has not been changed on this limited edition either, which means that all three blades are made from Buck’s long-standard 420HC. This is a pretty common choice for stainless traditional knives, and turns in pretty basic performance, but Buck’s 420HC does benefit from a performance-enhancing heat treat from Paul Bos, as do all their other steels. The real selling point on this particular 301 are the scales, which are made from “wood grain carbon fiber.” This stuff is pretty much what it says on the tin: the lightweight high performance synthetic we all know and love, but with wood grain-like whorls instead of the usual checkered or marbled look.

The 301 didn’t just lead the charge of these surprise releases, but is, sadly, the only model of the group still available. It released alongside a handful of temporarily returned discontinued models: the 547 Folding Skinner, 891 Spear Point fixed blade, and the 893, a tanto version of that knife.
