Justin Koch, the man behind Koch Tools, is partnering with Urban EDC Supply for a line of modern traditional knives. The series is kicking off today with the Rekluse-S, a slipjoint sized for EDC and styled like a Koch custom.
The “Modern Traditional” designation can mean a lot of things. There elements on the Rekluse-S modeled after more “traditional” traditional knives; it’s blade is not one of those elements. Although it is a very compact and widely legal 2.88 inches long, the compound-ground, trailing point blade has a lot of swagger. The blade’s flamboyant lines don’t get in the way of its role as a day-to-day jobber: the edge geometry is well-calibrated for slicing, and the upswept tip has readily apparent piercing capabilities. The S35VN blade steel reinforces these roles, with above average numbers in all the key performance metrics.
Instead of a traditional, shallow-cut nail mark, the Rekluse-S has a half-moon cutout that goes all the way through the blade. The look is a little unconventional, but the opening method is not: this is a classic two-hand opener, and a completely ambidextrous knife.
The handle design is where things revert to more classical lines. The Rekluse-S has a time-tested jack knife-style handle, with an arching back and no untoward finger grooves or other modern folder paraphernalia. The scales come in three different flavors: jade green G-10, brown Micarta, or green aluminum. All three versions have a faux bolster milled into their scales and a reversible, sculpted titanium pocket clip.
Pennsylvania-based Justin Koch also makes a custom knife called the Rekluse, and while it is the obvious inspiration for the Rekluse-S, there are significant differences between the two in terms of materials.
New collaborations are a key part of Urban EDC Supply’s 2021 game plan. The Rekluse-S reveal comes only a month after the release of the Nessie, maker Chris Taylor’s first production design.
The Rekluse-S is available for pre-order now. It is the first in a series of collaborations between Koch and Urban EDC Supply, dubbed the Swarm Series.
