Ostap Hel Hid Takes Place as Biggest Civivi Folder Yet

We’re continuing to work through the September batch of Civivi models and taking a look at the Hid, the next collaboration model between Civivi and Ostap Hel. This is a bit of a departure for Hel in terms of sheer size.

The name may evoke ideas of subterfuge, but there is nothing shy about this design. The Hid, in fact, is the biggest folder that Civivi has released to date, with a blade length of 4.14 inches. And there’s quite a blade shape on display here too, a wide, cleaveresque modified sheepsfoot. The modification puts the entire edge into a very gentle back-to-front curve, ideal for slicing. Some users love to rock XL EDCs and the Hid will do well for them in that role, but this one also looks like it would be a great camp site food prep blade.

There are elements of kitchen knife design in the Hid

Thumb studs provide the ambidextrous deployment method, and although we haven’t gotten our hands on the Hid yet, we’d imagine that the mass of the blade makes this one open and lock into place (with its liner lock) with a satisfying thwack. Recurring cast member 14C28N plays the part of blade steel here, with solid metrics that are a perfect fit for EDC as well as the aforementioned food prep.

The Hid’s handle runs out from the blade well north of the cutting edge, which gives the folder as a whole an anatomy not unlike that of many kitchen knives. Here, as on kitchen knives, that extra clearance makes deep downward cuts easier, as the user’s knuckles won’t hit the cutting surface at the same time the blade does. The handle itself is slim compared to the blade and outlined with hard angles; the scales are made from G-10, available in three different colors. The 5.2 oz. Hid comes with a reversible deep carry wire pocket clip.

The Hid was revealed alongside the Pragma in September, so it shouldn’t be too long before we see this one available.
