RoseCraft Cane Creek Jack Nods Towards Great Traditionals of the Past

The first new for 2024 RoseCraft Blades knife is here, the Cane Creek Jack. This one falls decidedly on the traditional side of RoseCraft’s output, and pays homage to a piece from a historical Sheffield knife company.

When it arrived on the scene in 2022, RoseCraft built its initial catalog around the work of its expansive in-house design crew. These designers have continued to grow the RoseCraft stable, and the Cane Creek comes from Andy Armstrong who, in addition to being one of the designers at RoseCraft, also runs the company as its General Manager. Prior to the Cane Creek, his latest RoseCraft release was the Tarakona, a modern flipper folder; that was one of the company’s last 2023 models, arriving in September.

The inspiration for the Cane Creek comes from a piece by Joseph Allen & Sons, a Sheffield, England-based knife manufacturer that worked around the turn of the 20th century, closing its doors in 1917. As is the case with many of these old traditional models, Allen & Sons pieces are highly desirable and collectible; you see them turn up on the secondary market from time to time, but that’s about it, so it’s cool to see some of their work iterated upon by modern manufacturers.

The Cane Creek’s 2.7-inch blade flaunts that long, sliding swedge that is a hallmark of traditional knife clip points. Ideal for everyday cutting chores, it is made from brushed D2 steel, which lends this daily user not only an adequate amount of edge retention, but some toughness on top of that. Opening is done the good old fashioned way, with a nail mark just like you’d expect, and a hearty half stop in place as well.

Armstrong describes the handle profile as a “coke bottle coffin” shape, and you can see why: it has the flared center points of a coffin, with the rounded bottom and gentle forward-moving taper of a coke bottle. In other words, ergos are squared away here, and the covers are a first for RoseCraft: multilayered G-10, with warm lines of orange and red radiating out from a black center line.

The Cane Creek Jack is available now, and we think it’s safe to say more new RoseCraft knives will follow.
