Viper Knives Catalog Waxes with the New Moon

Viper Knives is on the verge of releasing the Moon, an everyday carry piece that marks the first instance of the increasingly popular button lock mechanism from the Maniago, Italy-based manufacturer.

Fabrizio Silvestrelli is the man behind the Moon. He’s been a major presence on the Italian production knife scene since 2005, and has cultivated a chunky portfolio of designs in the intervening 19 years. Silvestrelli is a designer comfortable working in all sorts of different styles, from tactical folders to everyday carry fixed blades. Prior to the Moon, his most recent Viper piece was the Keeper 2, a flipper knife with a profile inspired by the Italian stiletto.

The Moon, on the other hand, is the latest entry in a kind of gentlemanly, high quality everyday carry knife that Viper is well-known for making. The blade length runs just under 3 inches, so most if not all quotidian cutting jobs will be within this one’s capabilities. Special shout out to the blade shape, too, an organic drop point with some nice, additional ergonomic features in the form of a forward finger choil beneath the blade and some jimping on the middle portion of its spine; both elements should help with delicate cutting tasks.

Opened with a thumb stud or a low-profile flipper tab, the blade steel is the current steel of the moment, MagnaCut. If you needed any more evidence of MagnaCut’s dominance, its recurring appearances at SHOT Show last week certainly confirmed that we’ll be seeing plenty of the stuff this year – and that’s a very good thing indeed. High marks across the board for this steel custom-made for application in everyday use knives.

Finally, the handle itself, with its multiple ridges, will keep the grip in the intended place. The scales that cover the Moon’s inner workings are made from various colors of Micarta and G-10; in keeping with the style of the time there’s a Fat Carbon Dark Matter option as well. Speaking of the interior, the Moon makes Viper knives history as the first ever button lock in their lineup; it appears to work much the same as other examples of the mechanism across the industry,
