Vosteed Chipmunk Deploys All Sorts of Ways

Vosteed Cutlery released its first new for 2024 today, the Chipmunk. The Chipmunk looks like a straightforward, smaller EDC knife, but packs multiple opening methods into its compact frame.

The Chipmunk seems to be a close relative of another recent Vosteed release, the Raccoon. That was a bit larger than the Chipmunk, but you can see the resemblance when looking at this one’s 2.64-inch blade. Like that on the Raccoon, it is a handsome drop point, compact but broad and robust for its size. It isn’t as round and bellied out as the Raccoon’s blade, and it’s smaller, of course, but it looks like it can fill a very similar EDC role for the average user.

The knives even share a blade steel. That’s right, 14C28N steel makes another appearance in the Vosteed lineup, offering a competent suite of steel traits for the price. 14C28N excels, in particular, in rust resistance and, perhaps more importantly for an entry level user knife, maintenance; neither too hard nor too soft, it holds a good edge but touches up on even the most rudimentary of sharpening setups.

You may not be able to tell at a glance, but one of the most interesting elements of the Chipmunk is the relatively numerous ways there are to open it. There’s the ambidextrous thumb stud, of course (although as a liner lock the Chipmunk isn’t 100% amenable to lefties), but an inline flipper tab on the spine side, and a textured but very low profile front flipper tab as well.

The Chipmunk went live at Vosteed’s site today.
