A limited edition We Knife Co. model is arriving with dealers now. This one is called the Upshot, a mid-to-large everyday carry folder with plenty of premium We Knife elements.
Designed by the We Knife crew, the Upshot has the in-house vibe: it’s brings to mind the big, baroque blades that We was putting out in its first few years, but with an additional layer of refinement. The Upshot’s blade measures 3.47 inches; its shape blurs the line between modified drop point and modified wharncliffe. The taxonomy may be a little confusing, but the intended application is not: this is a largeish EDC knife, and the high-end detailing and slender profile put it into the gent’s folder subgenre too. The Upshot opens exclusively with a flipper, and its blade steel is CPM-20CV.
Ergonomically, the Upshot’s most distinguishing characteristic is that, really, it has no distinguishing characteristics. There are no ergonomic landmarks on the handle at all, and only a minor front-to-back arch stops it from being entirely rectangular. But simple is often best when it comes to everyday carry, and the Upshot should let the user hold it however they want. No surprises on the handle material: the Upshot’s scales are made from titanium, of course, with a frame lock on the off-side. The spare, standoff-style construction keeps the bulk down, and the Upshot weighs 3.47 oz., which is a respectable number for a knife of its size. To add a little extra flair to this limited edition piece, We hit the titanium pocket clip with a psychedelic flame anodization job.
The Upshot is one of a few We Knife Co. projects (outside of their OEM work for other makers) that will only be around for a limited time. There are only 410 pieces for each of the two Upshot variations: one with a satin blade, the other with a blackwash coating. The knife is available now from several dealers, so if you like the way this one looks, you should act sooner rather than later.
