Bestech Spices up Supernova with Zirconium

Bestech is back with another in-house design, the Supernova. This one is an elegant everyday carry folder that is elevated by some pretty showy handle materials and intricate finishing details.

We classify the Supernova as an EDC, but it also qualifies as a gent’s folder (not that these two genres are mutually exclusive), thanks not only to its fancy construction but to its svelte, handsome profile. The 3.07-inch blade is a noble-looking clip point, with a harpoon-style swedge that, somehow, looks less aggressive than it does dignified. It opens with our old friend the flipper, and the blade steel is another very familiar face: M390, the Bohler-Uddeholm powder metallurgy recipe that is a recurring cast member with Bestech and many others.

The Supernova’s handle is sleek and bolstered – two things that help with that gent’s folder designation. The handle’s contoured scales are ergonomic and accommodating, ready to suit any grip needed during daily cutting chores. This isn’t the lightest knife in the Bestech catalog, probably due in part to some of its luxurious material choices (see below), but it is still more than reasonable in terms of weight, tipping the scales at 3.32 oz.

About those materials: Bestech went all-out with the Supernova. There’s the M390 steel, sure, which is a super steel but pretty much par for the course for models in this category. What is less common, especially in the Bestech catalog, is the big zirconium bolster, backspacer, and clip. Zirconium is a metal that, not that many years ago, would be unheard of on a production knife of any sort – and even now it’s not a common sight on standard models by any means. The bolster here, along with the titanium scale beneath, has been given an orange peel texturing for even more luxury appeal.

Bestech is always busy. The Supernova reveal is occurring alongside the debut of the second model in the company’s Bestechman label – a knife that will have an ambidextrous, Axis Lock-style locking mechanism. Stay tuned for more on that one.
