The ESEE AGK is the KnifeNews Readers’ Choice for Best New Outdoors Fixed Blade 2019! ESEE’s thoughtfully-designed fixed blade beat out the James Brand Hell Gap, Spyderco Province, TOPS A-Klub, and Victorinox Master Mic series for this award.

Sometimes, a collaboration between knife designer and company results in something that is totally unlike the rest of that company’s lineup. Other times, the new knife fits in so precisely with the company’s design style and philosophy that it looks like it was made by the in-house team. The AGK, ESEE’s collaboration with Ashley Emerson, without a doubt falls into that second category. This is a thoroughbred ESEE blade through and through, embodying the company’s focus on ruggedness, readiness, and utility. It just fits, and it obviously resonated with users this year.

The AGK is first and foremost a knife for hunters. Like any purpose-built blade, the expertise behind the AGK’s design really shows in the small details. The design of the tip, which is raised enough to puncture but low enough to be controllable; the purposefully skewed blade to handle ratio; the lack of a sharpening choil, which could snag on things during game prep. These aren’t big, flashy, back-of-the-box features, but they’re the kind of things that matters most when you’re out in the field with the knife.

Of course, there are very few knives that only catch the eye of specialists. The traits that make the AGK a great specialist don’t get in the way of making it a great generalist too; it serves admirably in just about any reasonable outdoor application – and, like all ESEE fixed blades, it is built to last with a sturdy full tang construction and rugged G-10 scales.
