New Serge Knife Co. Release Revives Sought-After Custom

Serge Panchenko is dropping a new model in his Serge Knife Co. production line, the Trope. This one hearkens back to a seldom seen custom flipper from a decade ago.

Panchenko wears many different hats: not only is he a custom knife maker, but he does collaboration customs, production knives inside and outside of his own label – the dude even established a watch company, the aptly named Serge Watch Co., tapping into an entirely different segment of the everyday carry community. The Trope originates in Pachenko’s custom work; he made several of these back in the early 2010s and, as is the case with pure custom pieces, they are long, long off the market and secured snugly in private collections. So this Trope will prove the most accessible version of the design, ever.

Compared to the customs, there are changes large and small. We’ll file the blade size difference under “large,” because the 2023 Trope runs bigger, with a blade length of 3.5 inches. The length, N690 steel, and sinuous, organic modified drop point shape collude to offer users a flexible EDC user that can cross the border between smaller and larger chores. The Trope custom had a flipper and an oversized thumb stud, but the 2023 production model is a pure flipper.

The handle really marks the Trope as a Panchenko design; it has that modified hourglass shape that we’ve seen Panchenko work with before; it reminded us immediately of the the Orbit, his collaboration mid-tech with Hawk Knives. The scales are stonewashed titanium, which lend the 2023 Trope a clean, industrial look; a frame lock is cut into the off-side scale and capped with a steel interface insert; the pocket clip, also titanium, is non-reversible.

The Trope will be available later today, Tuesday October 24th, at 9pm EST/6pm Pacific on the Serge Knife Co. website.
