The Spyderco Nightstick is the KnifeNews Readers’ Choice for Best New Tactical Fixed Blade 2020! Gayle Bradley’s tactical dagger reeled in the most votes in a category that also included the A.G. Russell Sandbox Dagger, Buck Ground Combat Knife, KA-BAR TDI Pocket Strike, and McNees Performance Machined Retainer.
Gayle Bradley has been working with Spyderco for many years; if you’ve been part of the knife community for any length of time, you’re bound to have seen one or more of their collaborative designs. Both in his custom and his production work, Bradley plays with different forms and functions, but no matter where his designs end up, functionality is always key.
The Nightstick follows in that tradition, but with a more – ahem – pointed tactical application than other Bradley/Spyderco knives, like the Bradley Bowie. Bradley is a student of knife history, and his knowledge shines through on the Nightstick’s classic dagger shape – which has only been sharpened on one side so as many users can carry this knife as possible. The symmetrical handle shape can be used in a variety of grips so users can get the most out of the 4.14-inch blade.
Tactical knives vary greatly in application, but one thing that carries through those applications is a need for flexibility. Perhaps that’s why Bradley and Spyderco chose to make this knife from S30V instead of the more specialized semi stainless steels Bradley usually favors. S30V is the textbook definition of reliable powder metallurgy steel, with strong performance in all categories maintained alongside relatively easy maintenance. A customizable Boltaron sheath rounds out the package by allowing for multiple different carry options.
This is the second year in a year Spyderco cinched the top spot in the Tactical Fixed Blade field. Last year readers voted the Sal Glesser-designed Respect best in the category.
Tune in tomorrow afternoon to see which knife won the KnifeNews Readers’ Choice Award for Best EDC Fixed Blade 2020!
