Vosteed Corsair Lets Users Adjust its Handle Size

It looks like Vosteed Cutlery has entered that middle phase of its trajectory as a knife company; it started off slowly but surely, but now it has clearly picked up the pace in terms of releases. Hot on the heels of the Corgi, the company is giving us another “Cor-” knife, the Corsair, a hardworking knife with a handle that can be adjusted in size.

That adjustable handle is a pretty interesting element, and we’ll get to it below, but in terms of profile the Corsair is admirable in its simplicity. The drop point blade kicks open with a thumb stud and measures 3.25 inches in length: a solid shape and size for an every day carry worker, backed up by Nitro-V blade steel. This stuff was an early entrant in the nitrogen-enriched steel category. Very close in composition to AEB-L, Nitro-V is stain resistant and handles both edge wear and sharpening with grace.

A Crossbar Lock is situated around the pivot, for security duty during use. Vosteed has rolled out a number of models with this mechanism on it. It’s an Axis Lock-like and, like its famous forebear, is not only strong and fun to play with, but allows for truly ambidextrous knife design. The handle scales that cover this mechanism are made from contoured Micarta, available in four different colorations.

In terms of shape, the handle doesn’t do anything we haven’t seen before: there’s just a finger guard up front with a contoured handle shape underneath it. However, designer (and Vosteed founder) Yue Dong did something a bit special with the backspacer. Out of the box, the Corsair uses barrel standoffs and a flowthrough construction; but it comes with a backspacer piece that, when swapped into the knife, actually extends the handle, providing more grip space and a lanyard attachment point.

The Corsair is available now.
