The second Bestech/Vulpex Knives collab is on the way, and this time it’s a fixed blade. The Bestech VK-Core emulates a popular custom model from the Berlin-based maker.
One of the enduring pleasures of the knife hobby, particularly for those of us with limited funds to spend on our passion, is when a custom model gets a production counterpart, bringing the lines and the function of the less-accessible original to a larger audience. As cool as a brand new design is, sometimes you just want to get your hands on a knife that you’ve only ever looked at in pictures; the VK-Core should check the box for lots of people.
It’s a production take on the Vulpex VK, a fixed blade model that maker Steven Kempa has iterated on throughout his burgeoning custom career. The VK-Core models itself after the wharncliffe-bladed version, with a 3.19-inch blade in that popular shape. The length and shape allows the Core to do a little of everything, whether you want it to slice up foodstuffs, or be a daily carry, or accompany you on outdoors adventures. The blade steel is 14C28N, a highly reliable stainless steel that is easy to maintain, and it sports the copper stud insert that is the Vulpex Knives signature visual flourish.
The handle arches subtly but noticeable behind the guard and, after the deep finger groove, the handle as whole tapers down to a narrow back end. Three large holes have been cute into the tang, which makes the Core quite a light knife at 2.7 oz.; there’s also a lanyard hole implemented and a Kydex sheath for all your carrying needs. While there are no official add-on scale options for the VK-Core, it seems like it would be an amenable platform for custom scales.
The VK-Core is expected to arrive at the end of February. In the meantime you can preorder it if you’d like.
