Bestech Knives has signed a new designer and his first knife is coming out this month. Jesse Pauley, AKA Caveman EDC, is bringing out the Dactyl, a beefy but relatively compact EDC folder.
Pauley got into the knifemaking biz in a modern, but increasingly popular way: the online knife/EDC community. An enthusiast before he was a designer, Pauley created the Caveman EDC Facebook group as a space for like-minded EDCers to gather, chat, and show off their latest gear acquisitions. Eventually, his online presence grew large enough that Pauley was able to start collaborating with makers, which eventually brought him to Bestech for the Dactyl.

The Dactyl is certainly one of those knives that, in images, looks like it would be an absolutely honker. When we first saw it we figured, maybe a 3.5, 3.75-inch blade? But in fact, the Dactyl is a fairly smallish knife – albeit still large enough to be a full-featured EDC: its listed blade length is 2.98 inches. The blade shape is a wide-snouted, compound-ground, Japanese-style tanto – that is to say, the delineation between the primary and secondary edges is gradual rather than instant. Opened primarily with a front flipper, the Dactyl also has an oval groove cut into, but not through, the MagnaCut blade that can also be used to get it open.
The handle is an interesting mix of straight angles and long, shallow curves; we expect this dynamism will make it easy to locate all four fingers in whatever grip you choose to, uh, grip it with. There is a titanium bolster lock on the off-side scale, partially concealed beneath the inlaid scale slab. There are, of course, multiple options for the material of said inlays, but our favorite, and the one we’ve chosen to feature throughout this article, is the 80s Camo Carbon variant, which is, as the kids once said, pretty rad. The Dactyl weighs 3.81 oz.
It will be available around Halloween.
