ABOUT GERBER Want a Gerber? Get it now at BladeHQ
Gerber has been in the cutlery business since Joseph Gerber began selling kitchen knives in 1939. Today, they are owned by the Finnish company Fiskars, but still manufacture some of their knives at their headquarters in Portland, Oregon. Gerber has been a major military supplier since the 1960s, and their blades and multi-tools are easy to spot on most US military bases. Additionally, they manufacture pocket, hunting, and outdoor knives, and collaborated with famous survivalist Bear Grylls on a line of survival knives.
We surveyed involved production knife enthusiasts and asked them to list as many production knife brands as they could remember to gauge brand awareness. 100 out of 175 respondents were able to recall Gerber and of the 100, 19 did so within their first 3 responses. The average survey respondent was able to recall 12 knife brands and in total 167 brands were recalled.
Research indicates that there is a relationship between brand recall and market share, because in most buying situations a brand must be prominent in the mind of a buyer in order for them to consider purchasing it.
The survey, which was also the basis for our Infographic, did not measure brand esteem or brand identity and has nothing to do with what knife people think about the brands. Instead, it provides an indication of how widely the brand is known and if it has a strong place in the minds of involved production knife enthusiasts.
Visit KnifeNews tomorrow to find out which brand is #5 on our list of the Top Knife Brands that Stick in the Minds of Knife People.

These knives suck. I bought one and it fell apart. The company must have given you money to place them so high so they could sell knives. I will never purchase a gerber knife again

Yeah I know. Still can’t fathom Gerber being more recognizable than Case though. I know what it’s based on.

Most the younger generation have never heard of Case. It’s just not as marketed like Gerber. Everywhere sells Gerber. Walmart to Cabelas. Hell, gas stations and grocery stores sometimes have Gerber knives

Not a Gerber fan. Get some benchmade or some spyderco and then we’re talking.

A yellow handle Case trapper with cv blades is hard to beat. If you are into the more modern knives the Kershaw Blur is a good choice.

I had a Gerber for a while. It would go dull opening an MRE… I love my benchmade, and Spyderco is a really good brand but honestly my favorite knives are cold steel.
