Ferrum Forge Follows up Fan Favorite Fixed Blade with XL Sequel

The crew at Ferrum Forge just released a new version of the Lackey, their popular 2019 fixed blade. It’s called the Lackey XL: any guesses as to what it brings to the table?

As the knife market has grown and changed, Ferrum Forge has made no secret about its desire to expand its repertoire beyond the limited, handmade pieces that defined their early output. Over the years, they’ve ramped up the production side of things considerably; released in 2019, the original Lackey was one of the defining pieces of this phase of their development. With its 2.89-inch drop point blade, the Lackey fell right on the line between a neck knife and a full-featured EDC fixed blade – a genre that the usually folder-centric Ferrum Forge hadn’t visited for several years. The knife proved to be quite a hit, and even managed to win the Best EDC Fixed Blade award in our own parish at the 2019 Readers’ Choice Awards.

As is de rigeur with any popular knife model, fans started asking for a larger version – and that’s exactly the box that the Lackey XL checks. With a 4.6-inch blade, the XL scales things up by 1.7 inches – a much bigger bump up in length than most large knife expansions. The bigger blade means that the Lackey XL has scaled itself out of the neck knife category, of course, but now it can also move into the full-sized EDC fixed blade and companion outdoors knife roles.

In terms of the overall blueprint, the Lackey XL makes no major changes to the original design. Its blade is the same capable drop point, and (also like its little brother), the Lackey XL can be made from either D2 or 9Cr18MoV steel. The former is better in overall edge retention, while the latter qualifies as fully stainless if rust or corrosion are a concern. You can choose between two colors for the G-10 handle scales: green or black. The full tang Lackey XL comes with a Kydex sheath and weighs 4.7 oz.

Available now, the Lackey XL arrives ahead of a pair of other anticipated Ferrum Forge releases. The Archbishop 3.0 is scheduled for November, and Ferrum Forge says the frame lock Stingers will arrive a few months after that.
