OKC Brings the Besra into the Fixed Blade Genre

Ontario Knife Company’s new for 2023 product announcements just keep coming. OKC gave us our first glimpse at the Besra FXD today. This is a fixed blade modeled on a folder that first came out in 2020.

Like most OKC folders, the Besra was released at a wallet friendly price point. Despite the price it still tried to encompass a lot of big knife trends, like its wharncliffe/cleaver blade and a frame lock flipper setup. And, even with an MSRP around $55, the Besra managed to have that frame lock made from titanium – an unusual touch even with the increasing complexity and quality of the budget knife genre.

Now we have the Besra FXD, which takes that wharnie/cleaver hybrid blade into a non-locking format. The Besra folder was an EDC knife, and despite the change in mechanism here that’s a role the FXD looks ready for as well; it isn’t that much bigger than its predecessor really, with a blade length of 3.25 inches. Almost any fixed blade can make a good sidekick out of doors, and we’d say that’s the case with the Besra FXD too, although given its compact form factor, it may be relegated to a backup role on extended trips. The 1075 carbon steel certainly brings outdoor work to mind, as this simple carbon steel excels in rough and tumble environments, able to take a beating and bounce back with minimal maintenance.

The folding knife’s angular, in-line handle is carried forward too, albeit resized to coordinate with the scaled up blade. With no need for a titanium lock side, both the front and back scales here are made from natural canvas Micarta. The FXD benefits from the now-standard full tang construction (although not so long ago that wasn’t a guarantee on fixed blades!), and it comes with a leather sheath for carry.

The Besra FXD is new for 2023 OKC knife number three. The company has been unveiling new knives all month, starting with the Camp Plus EDC and then following that up a week or so later with the Stealth, which was also a fixed blade.
